The benefits of walkable communities and local food

Over the next few posts I will be writing what will appear to be a format change, but one which fits the larger vision I have for this blog. Normally I focus on electric vehicles and the project of spreading their adoption. For me the purpose of electrification is part of a larger context that includes walkable communities and local fresh food. I have been privileged to spend the last month living in a country where both are common, but there are signs that the pattern is under threat from modernization and the spread of car oriented mentality.

In this country almost everyone lives in apartment buildings left over from the era of Communist rule. It means the cities have a high population density. As a result there are shops at the ground floor of every building. Daily needs can be purchased within a short walk for nearly anyone.
